Biochemistry is a very interesting body of knowledge. It is an endeavour into a field which enriches the study of the human system. In the present times, the study of Biochemistry is greatly influencing other fields like Life Sciences, Food Sciences, Biotechnology, Applied Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Bioinformatics (Computational Biology), Patent law and Intellectual Property Rights, Clinical Research and Diagnostics, Agriculture, Molecular Biology and Molecular Diagnostics. Recognizing its importance and potential, the Department has been nominated as one of the Departments to receive funds under the Star College Scheme of DBT since 2010 and has been awarded “Star Department Status” in the year 2017 by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Star-funds have been used for enriching the curriculum by introducing new practical, new techniques, conducting workshops, seminars, Visits to Institutes, organizing minor projects for students with an aim of motivating the students to take up higher studies or career in Biological Sciences.

Ever since its inception more than two decades ago, the College has added tremendously to the infrastructure catering to the students studying Biochemistry. The state-of-the-art Laboratory at the college is well equipped to take care of the needs of the students. It familiarizes the students with the latest and the most sophisticated of equipment like Trans-Illuminators, Spectrophotometers (UV-Visible and Visible), Electrophoresis apparatus (Vertical, Horizontal, Slab, Paper, Rod) Thin layer chromatography, Gel filtration chromatography, orbital Shaking Incubator, Quartz double- distillation Water purification system, Deep freezer, cooling Cabinets, Microscopes and the use of equipment like Vortex Shaker, Magnetic Stirrer, Autoclave, Centrifuge, Laminar air flow chamber and pH meter.

The Department of Biochemistry is a vibrant department and it conducts Workshops and training sessions for the benefit of students. A student can opt for study of Generic Elective papers offered by the Department of Biochemistry as per the NEP curriculum.
